Specific liver diseases Flashcards
How is bacterial cholangiohepatitis diagnosed and treated?
Biopsy and culture
Treat with sensitive ABs
What liver pathology is associated with end-stage liver disease?
Cirrhosis
Liver shrinks with micro/macro nodular regeneration
Give examples of what may cause an acquired PSS?
Portal hypertension
Cirrhosis
Lobular dissecting hepatitis
A dog has neurological signs that seem to worsen after feeding a meal. What is your most likely diagnosis?
Hepatic encephalopathy
What clinical sign is common in cats with hepatic encephalopathy?
Hypersalivaiton
What 3 forms of cholangitis make up ‘feline cholangitis complex’?
Suppurative - neutrophics
Lymphocytic - lymphocytes, plasma cells
Sclerosing - end stage of above forms
Hepatic portal hypoplasia or microvascular dysplasia causes microscopic intrahepatic shunts. What clinical signs are seen? What size and breed dogs are prone?
Slight increased bile acids, but no clinical signs
Small terrier breeds prone
Lobular dissecting hepatitis is uncommon. What breeds of young dogs may it be seen in?
GSD
Rottweiler
Poodle
(Fibrosis dissects hepatocytes - may cause inflm, ascites, acquired PSS and poor growth)
What does paracetamol toixcity cause in cats?
Haemolytic anaemia
Facial oedema
Hepatocellular damage
How is paracetamol toxicity treated in cats?
N-acetylcysteine S- adenoysl methionine Vitamin C Activated charcoal if recent ingestion Supportive care
Name some drugs that are hepatotoxic to cats
Paracetamol Aspirin Morphine (Alcohol Barbiturates)
What do copper coloured irises suggest in cats?
PSS
How is ascites/oedema due to liver disease treated?
Spironolactone - first choice, furosemide
Low sodium diet
(Paracentesis may worsen protein status)
