Specific Battery Test Flashcards
Specific gravity
is a measure of how much a given volume of a sub stance weighs in comparison to the same volume of water. The specific gravity of water is 1.000. In comparison, concentrated sulfuric acid weighs 1.835 times as much as the same volume of water. Thus, the specific gravity of sulfuric acid is 1.835.
hydrometer
is an instrument used to measure and compare the relative weights of liquids (Figure 23). A hydrometer measures the specific gravity of a liquid directly. It consists of a glass tube with a weighted float inside. When liquid is drawn up into the glass tube, the float rises or sinks according to the specific gravity of the liquid. The float is marked so that the specific gravity can be read.
