Special Battery Types Flashcards
nickel cadmium battery or NiCad
a very popular type of rechargeable battery used on many different types of industrial tools and systems. Almost all cordless or battery-powered tools use NiCad battery packs containing two or more cells. Also, most of the computer memory boards in industrial controllers and personal computers use NiCad batteries to maintain DC power to the memory circuits.
Lithium cells
are used as backup power supplies for memory circuit boards, alarm systems, and smoke alarms. Lithium batteries are also used in watches and pacemakers.
energy density
Lithium batteries have a long life (up to 10 years) before they dis charge due to internal resistance. Also, lithium batteries have a high discharge rate per unit volume and weight
poly carbon monofloride cell (type of lithium cell)
The polycarbon monofloride cell has a flat discharge rate, which means that the cell maintains the same voltage throughout its discharge cycle. The polycarbon cell has a current discharge time of between 25 and 500 mAH.
manganese dioxide cell (type of lithium cell)
The manganese dioxide cell has a high discharge rate, meaning that it can maintain a high current (without voltage loss). he manganese cell has a discharge time of between 32 and 1,000 mAH. At cold temperatures (–20°C), the manganese cell can produce more then four times the energy of the polycarbon cell.
uninterrwptable power supplies or UPS systems.
the lead/acid battery that’s used in forklifts is also available in small sizes. This smaller battery is used in special backup systems for computers. These batteries are maintenance-free and don’t even contain vent holes. Instead, all internal gases are chemically recombined into their original compounds. Safety lighting systems also use these lead/acid batteries.
