Other Sources of DC Power Flashcards
power supply
The most common DC source. A power supply converts standard AC line voltages of 120 VAC or 240 VAC to the low voltages needed for computers and electronic circuits. Power supplies can produce positive and negative voltages of 5, 10, 12, 15, or 24 VDC.
DC generator (dynamo)
DC generators produce current by converting magnetic energy into electric energy. When larger amounts of direct current are needed, or when a source of DC voltage is needed for special applications, a DC generator may be more economical than a power supply or a battery.
Other DC voltage sources
include devices that convert mechanical, light, and heat energy into electric energy.
accelerometer
An accelerometer is a device used to detect and measure vibrations in industrial machinery. An accelerometer uses a crystal (much like the one in a phonograph needle) to create electricity.
photovoltaic cell
A photovoltaic cell (or simply photocell) generates a voltage when exposed to light. These cells are used in photographic light meters and in industrial automation equipment.
thermocouple
In a thermocouple, two different types of metals are mechanically joined. Heating the junction of the two metals produces a DC voltage across the output terminals of the thermocouple.
