Species and taxonomy Flashcards
If two organisms belong to the same species they can…?
Produce fertile offspring
Courtship behaviour
The behaviour by which members of a species select reproductive partners
Role of courtship behaviour
It enables organisms to recognise their own species, identify a mate with a capacity to breed, form a pair bond, synchronise mating and become able to breed themselves
Phylogenetic classification system
Attempts to arrange species into groups based on their evolutionary origins and relationships. It uses a hierarchy in which smaller groups are placed within larger groups, with no overlap between groups. Each group is called a taxon (plural taxa)
Taxes
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species
What is a binomial?
e.g. Homo sapiens
What helps to clarify evolutionary relationships between organisms?
Advances in immunology and genome sequencing
