Biodiversity within a community Flashcards
Species richness
A measure of the number of different species in a community
Index of diversity
Describes the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species
Index of diversity equation
D = N(N-1)
/
Sum of: n(n-1)
Farming techniques that reduce biodiversity
Monoculture, which is the practice of growing only one crop in a large area. This can deplete the soil of nutrients and make it more vulnerable to pests and diseases.
Intensive farming, which uses machines, fertilisers, and high yield crops to increase food production. This can cause soil erosion, water pollution, and habitat loss.
Hedgerow removal, which is the elimination of natural boundaries between fields. This can reduce the shelter and food sources for wildlife and affect the pollination of crops.
The balance between conservation and farming
Sustainable agriculture is an approach to farming that aims to balance the production of food and other agricultural products with the conservation of natural resources and ecosystems. It focuses on maintaining soil health, water quality, and biodiversity while ensuring long-term food security.
Conservation
Where humans manage the earth’s natural resources in such a way that maximum use of them can be made in the future
Why is conservation needed?
Ethical as species should be allowed to coexist with us since they have occupied the earth for far longer than we have.
Economic as living organisms contain a large pool of genes with the capacity to make millions in the future. granted ecosystems are maintained in their natural balanced state, long term productivity is greater.
Cultural and aesthetic. our lives are enriched by habitats and organisms. Their variety adds interest to everyday life.
