Q

What is sympatric speciation

A

Q

What happens when populations become reproductively isolated and try to mate

A

When populations become reproductively isolated and try to mate, can lead to
Physical incompatibility - species coexist, but can’t mate for physical reasons
Hybrid inviability- offspring is weak and can’t survive long enough to breed
Hybrid sterility offspring is sterile

Q

What are ecological and temporal isolation

A

Ecological isolation is when species occupy different parts of habitat.
Temporal isolation is when species exist in same area, but mate at different times.

Q

What is behavioural isolation

A

Behavioural isolation is when species exist in same area, but don’t respond to courtship behaviour e.g different mating rituals/calls
