Coping With Climate Change 2 Flashcards
How are salmon and trout affected by global warming
Salmon and trout use seasonal temp changes as a trigger for spawning, hatching and growth rate. When water temp rise high enough, fish stops growing. So if water warms quicker (as a result of global warming), fish may top growing before they are heavy enough to survive in winter
How are leatherback turtles affected by global warming
Leatherback turtles are affected by global warming because egg incubation temp determine gender of offspring (no sex chromosomes). Higher temp results in females so there will be an imbalance in sex ratio. May wipe out male turtles - extinction
What is phenology, examples and what happens as a result of temp increase
Phenology is studying seasonal events in plants and animals
Examples are things that are sensitive to length of daylight hours and temp e.g flowering, fruiting, egg laying. Temp increase causes a loss of synchronicity in some feeding relationships because temp is rising and length of daylight is constant
What is an example of how phenology is affected by global warming
Example of how phenology is affected by global warming is Great Tit.
The stimulus for Great Tits to nest and lay eggs is day length.
They feed chicks on moth caterpillars but moth caterpillars lay eggs earlier and they hatch earlier in response to increasing temperature. So now moth caterpillars are around before chicks, so chicks will starve.
When do you use a line and bar graph
Line graph is used for continuous data. Dependent variable on y axis and independent variable on x axis
Bar graph is used for categorical data
What is photoperiod
Photoperiod is day length.
5point plan for effect of temperature on germination of grass seeds
5 point plan for effect of temperature on germination of grass seeds is:
Independent: put Petri dishes to germinate in locations of a different temperature leg fridge, incubator
Dependent: count number of seeds that have germinated on successive days
Controlled: number of seeds
Seeds from same species of grass
Grass used to produce seeds treated in same way
Control: Repeat exeperriment with dead seeds
Repeat 5 times and calculate mean
Why does increase in C02 concentration affect growth of plants
Increase in C02 concentration affects growth of plants because:
C02 is limiting factor and is fixed to produce GP. So more C02 results in more glucose produced
