SPECIATION Flashcards
Speciation
Speciation is the generation of new biological species by
evolution as a result of isolation, mutation and selection
Importance of isolation barriers
The importance of isolation barriers in preventing gene flow between sub-populations during speciation
Species
A species is a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring, and which does not normally breed with other groups
Allopatric speciation
Gene flow between 2 (or more) populations is prevented by a geographical barrier
Sympatric speciation
2 (or more) populations live in close proximity to one another in the same environment, yet they become genetically isolated = because of gene flow between them is prevented by the presence of behaviour or ecological barriers
when it occurs
occurs when circumstances arise that prevent gene flow between 2 populations causing their gene pools to diverge
