Speciation Flashcards
Speciation
Process of genetic isolation and genetic divergence that is responsible for the creation of a new species
Species
An evolutionary independent unit in nature - meaning a pop or group of pops that is isolated from others and is thus experiencing the effects of natural selection, genetic drift and mutation independently of others
Population
A group of individuals from the same geographic region that generally mate together
Genetic isolation
Lack of gene flow between pops of the same species
Genetic divergence
the process in which two or more pops of an ancestral species accumulate independent genetic changes
Allopatric speciation
Species is split due to a geographic barrier or because some individuals move to a different place
Sympatric speciation
Species is split by reproductive separation even though they are in the same place
