How to think like a biologist Flashcards
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for something that researchers have observed - must be falsifiable
Prediction
A statement of an outcome that should occur if the hypothesis is correct
Null hypothesis
A hypothesis that represents the “not” or “no effect” contrast to the hypothesis being tested
Treatment/Experimental group
Group that experiences conditions and manipulation
Control group
Comparison group that represents the normal or no treatment conditions
Controlled conditions
Aspects of environmental design (used on both groups) to eliminate bias and reduce influence of confounding factors - ensures your results are because of your specific factor
Outcome variable
Variable that is measured in a study (quantity)
