speciation- Flashcards

1
Q

what is speciation?

A

= creation of a new species
= one original population becomes reproductivley isolated, two populations of same species but cannot interbreed

Q

What does speciation result to?

A

= acumulation of differences in their gene pool
= 2 populations unable to interbreed to produce fertile offspring
= classed as 2 different species

Q

What are the 2 ways?

= geographically (allopatric)
= changes in reproductive mechanistms (sympatric)

Q

What happens in allopatric speciation?

A

= populations becomes seperated geographically- reproductive isolation
= geaographical isolation seperates population into 2
= unable to reproductive geographical barrier
= seperate population accunulate different beneficial mutations to help sutvive environments
=accumulation of different DNA- the two populatios become so different, unable to interbreed to produce fertile offspring so become 2 different species

Q

What is sympatric speciation?

A

= differences in behavior
= random mutation, impact reproductive behavior, differnt courtship behavior ect,..
= cannot reproduce,
= accumultate different mutations that their DNA is so different they cannot inetrbreed to produce fertile offspring
= classed as 2 different species
