Specialized cells (plant) Flashcards
Where are guard cells found?
They are found on the leaves and stems.
What is the function for the guard cells?
They work in pairs to open and close very tiny pores in the leaves called stomata.
Why do the stomata need to be opened and closed?
Gases needed by the plant enter through open stomata and unwanted gases leave the same way.
What happens when the plant needs to reduce water loss?
The guard cells close the stomata.
What is the function for conducting cells?
They transport water from the leaves to the to the roots and stems.
What do conducting cells look like?
They are long thin tubes, like drinking straws.
Where do plants take in water?
Their roots.
What is needed for photosynthesis?
Water, carbon dioxide and the sun
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the leaves.
In what place do plants have lots of chloroplasts?
The leaves and stems.
What is the chemical in chloroplasts?
Chlorophyll
What is the function for chlorophyll?
It traps the Sun’s energy, which the plant then uses for photosynthesis.
Do plants that are not exposed to sunlight for e.g. roots contain chloroplasts and are they green?
No.
What are the structural cells?
They are the cell walls.
What do cell walls act as?
A skeleton.
