Cell organelles (plant, animal and fungi) Flashcards
What are the vacuoles?
They are organelles that are found in the cell.
What is the function for the vacoules?
-Animal vacuoles contain wastes or chemicals that are being moved around in the cell.
-Plant vacuoles are filled with sap and store water, wastes and nutrients.
What is the difference between vacuoles in a plant cell and vacuoles in an animal cell?
Vacuoles in plant cells are large and occupies most of the cell. Animal cells contain several vacuoles that are smaller.
What happens when the vacuoles in a plant cell fill up with sap, water, wastes and nutrients?
It pushes up against the cell wall keeping the the plant rigid.
What is the mitochondria?
The powerhouses of the cell.
What is the function for the mitochondria?
They release energy from food.
What are the lysosomes?
They are the garbage disposals units for the cell.
What is the function for the lysosomes.
They get rid of wastes from the cell.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum function?
They form pathways to allow materials to move quickly and easily through the cell.
What are the other important structures within the animal cell?
The ribosomes.
Why are ribosomes not considered organelles?
Because they are not always enclosed in the cell membrane.
What are ribosomes?
They are microscopic cells.
What is the function for ribosomes?
They produce proteins used by animals for growth and repair.
What is the function for chloroplasts?
They make food using energy from the sun to chemically combine water and carbon dioxide from the air to make glucose.
What do chloroplast have inside themselves?
A green substance called chlorophyll.
