Cells which are undifferentiated and are capable of becoming a specialized cell (blank slate)
Can be used as medical treatments for disease or injuries
The daughter cells of stem cells can express genes in different ways to become different specialized cells (eg. skin cells, nerve cells, etc.) (Cellular differentiation)

What are the types of stem cells

Answer 2

Embryonic stem cells
- Only found in embryos (undeveloped fetuses)
- Can differentiate into any cell
Tissue (adult) stem cells
- Found in adults
- Only turn into certain types of cells
- Eg. bone marrow has cells which can turn into certain types of blood cells, but no other type of cell
