Circulatory system Flashcards
What is the order of blood flow in the heart
Vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, lungs, pulmonary veins, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, cells of the body
What type of blood is brought from the lungs
Oxygenated blood
What type of blood is brought from the cells of the body
Deoxygenated blood
Where do veins send blood
Towards the heart
Where do arteries send blood
Away from the heart
What are capillaries
1 cell thick
Used for diffusion and osmosis
Remove oxygen and take in carbon dioxide
Arranged in clumps (capillary beds)
- Used to increase surface area = higher efficiency
What are red blood cells
Purpose is to transport gas (O2 and CO2)
The form of red blood cells is circular to allow easier flow
What are platlets
Help for blood to clot
Used for scarring and cuts on body
What are white blood cells
Protect the body by fighting invaders and harmful bacteria
What is blood composed of
55% of blood is consisted of plasma
- Mostly water
- Proteins
- Electrolytes
- Dissolved gases
45% consisted of red blood cells
Less that 1% of blood consists of white blood cells
