Specialised Plant Cells Flashcards
What adaptation does a Root Hair cell have?
It has a long tube that elongates outwards, it has many micro hair like structures which increase the surface area of the root hair cell. Also it increases the amount of mineral ions and water entering the plant.
How do mineral ions enter the plant cell?
Enter through the Root Hair Cell via active transport.
How does Water enter the plant?
Through the root hair cell via osmosis
What is the Phloem?
A tube that is made up of specialised cells:
- Sieve Cells
- Companion Cells
What is a sieve cell?
A living cell that is unique as it is lacking a nucleus at maturity
What is a companion cell?
A cell that contains loads of mitochondria that respire to release energy for transportation of food molecules mainly sucrose.
In which direction does the Phloem transport food molecules?
Upwards And Downwards
What is the Xylem?
A group of dead cells that have no contents and they transport water UP the plant
What adaptations does the Xylem have?
It has no cell contents which means it has more room to carry more water up the plant
In which direction does the Xylem transport water?
ONLY UP
