Respiration Flashcards
What is Respiration?
Respiration is the process of releasing energy by breaking down organic compounds
What are the 2 types of Respiration?
- Anaerobic
- Aerobic
What is Aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the respiration that takes place when there is a plentiful supply of oxygen.
Equation for Aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen——> Energy
What is Anaerobic respiration
This respiration occurs when there isn’t enough oxygen to react with glucose.
Equation for anaerobic respiration IN ANIMALS
Glucose —-> Lactic Acid + Small amount of energy
Equation for anaerobic respiration IN PLANTS
Glucose ——> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
What is Lactic Acid?
Lactic avid is a mild poison that builds up in muscle cells and causes cramps.
How do you get rid of Lactic Acid?
A good supply of oxygenated blood is needed to decompose the build up of Lactic Acid. It must be oxygenated as the lactic acid must be oxidised to decompose.
What is the equation for Respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —-> Carbon Dioxide + Water
Symbol equation for respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O
