Specialised Cells Flashcards
What does a white blood cell do?
Involved in the immune system
Engulfs bacteria
Makes antibodies
Makes antitoxins
What does an animal cell do?
Stores fat
Can expand and do not need much energy
What is a red blood cell?
Contains red pigment
Biconcave disk shape
Small diameter
What does a cone cell do?
Converts light in your eyes by striking the retina into nerve impulses
Synapses connect to the optic nerve
Lots of mitochondria
What do stomata do?
Allow gases and water to enter and leave the leaf
What do xylem cells do?
Transport water up a plant through stem and roots
Made of dead cells
What do root hair cells do?
Take up water and mineral ions into the root
What do palisade cells do?
Enable photosynthesis to occur because it contains many chloroplasts
What do sperm cells do?
Carries genetic material to the egg
Lots of mitochondria to provide energy for movement
What does a motor neuron do?
Carries impulses from the central nervous system to the effector organs
