Proteins, Catalysts And Enzymes Flashcards
What are protein molecules made up of?
Long chains of amino acids
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction with being changed itself
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst made of protein
What is an active site?
The special part in the structure of an enzyme where the substance binds
What are enzymes involved in?
Building large molecules from lots of smaller ones
Changing one molecule into another
Breaking down large molecules into smaller ones
What factors effect enzyme action?
Temperature
pH
High temperatures and the wrong pH can affect the shape of the active site of an enzyme
What do proteins act as?
Structural components - such as muscles and tendons
Hormones - such as insulin
Antibodies - which destroy pathogens
Catalysts - in the form of enzymes
