Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
The chemical process which occurs on a cellular level. It is controlled by enzymes and releases energy
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen + Glucose –> Carbon Dioxide + Water
opposite of photosynthesis
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
The mitochondria
What is breathing?
The physical process of ventilating the lungs and getting gassed in and out of the body
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose –> Lactic Acid
Is anaerobic respiration an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Exothermic
Why is anaerobic respiration not as efficient as aerobic respiration?
The lactic acid that is created in anaerobic respiration builds up in the muscles which can damage them if it is in the muscles for too long
Lactic acid causes muscle __________. Oxygen breaks down this lactic acid. The needed oxygen in the muscles is called ________________.
- Fatigue
