Specialised Cells Flashcards
What happens in sexual reproduction?
The nucleus of an egg fuses with the nucleus of the sperm cell to create a fertilised cell.
What is the main function of the egg cell?
Carry the female DNA and nourish the developinv embryo in the early stages
How is the egg cell adapted to its function?
1.) It contains nutrients in the cytoplasm for the embryo.
2.) It has a haploid nucleus
3.) Straight after fertilisation, the structure changes to only let one sperm cell in.
What is the main function of the sperm cell?
To transport the male DNA to the females egg
How is the sperm cell adapted for its function?
1.) Long tail so it can swin to the egg
2.) Lots of mitochondria in the middle section to provide energy needed to swim to the egg
3.) Acrosome at front of head, which contains enzymes to digest the membrane of the egg cell
4.) Contains a haploid nucleus
What are ciliated epithelial cells adapted for? And where were they found?
To move substances and are found on the lining of the surface of organs
Why are ciliated epithelial cells on the lining of your airway?
Moves mucus to the throat so that it can be swallowed and doesn’t reach the lungs
What are cilia?
Hair like structures on the top surface of the ciliated epithelial cell
