Coverage Lanes
Vertical sections of the field that members of kickoff unit are assigned to once ball is kicked
Directional Punting
Strategy used to reduce the number of available lanes for a returner
Kickoff Safeties
Employed by a kickoff coverage unit to create a small second line of defense in the event the primary coverage unit it beaten
Open-Field Punt
Occurs when the LOS on a punt is between a team’s own goal line and its 40-yard line; used to change field position
Pin Deep Punt
Any punt picked when the LOS is from a team’s 41-yard line forward
Onside Kick
Designed for the kicking team to recover the football
Pooch Kick
Also known as sky kicks, similar to squib kicks in that the main aim of the kicking team is to prevent a dynamic returner from cleanly receiving the ball
Punt Gunner
Members of punt unit that align on the edges of the formation usually on or outside the numbers
Squib Kick
Used by kickoff coverage units to avoid a dangerous returner or big play; typically employed at the end of a half or game
