Backpedal
Technique used in pass coverage by a defender allowing him to keep eyes on the ball and man at the same time
Catch Man
Defensive tactic where defenders “catch” or jam the WR in open field to disrupt route
Click and Close
Ability of a DB or LB to read the flow of action while diagnosing the play and then attacking
Hip Fluidity
Key trait for CB’s allowing change of direction while maintaining balance, rotating lower body quickly and mirroring quick cuts
Jam
Collision forced by the defender with a WR coming off the line of scrimmage disrupting the path and timing of the route
Press Man Technique
Also known as “Bump and Run” where the CB is close to the LOS, facing the WR, looking to jam WR within 5 yards
Robber Technique
A safety moving from pre-snap position toward the LOS attempting to disrupt crossing, slant, in and dig routes
Roll Coverage
To show one coverage look before the snap and then shifting to a different coverage after ball is the snapped
Running the Arc
Occurs when an edge defender attacks with an outside pass rush, going up-field and around the opposing OT’s frame and into the pocket
Speed Turn
Technique for DB’s to flip their hips without losing speed while covering WR’s
Sugar The A Gap
To line up one or two LB’s in the A gaps deceiving an A gap blitz before dropping into coverage
Swim Move
Pass-rushing technique used primarily by DL and LB’s similar to swim stroke
Wall Technique
Underneath coverage used by defenses to help secondary defenders with deep coverage responsibility
Zone Turn
Maneuver executed by a DB where he flips his hips toward the inside of the field to face QB while in coverage
2-Point Stance
Features 2 points of contact with the ground (2 feet); seen with safeties, CB’s, LB’s along with most base 3-4 OLB’s
