The first 6 steps to a blood
Culture
Introduce yourself
Properly identify the patient
Wash hands and Don gloves
Assemble supplies, including a winged infusion set and blood culture collection bottles
Review medical requisition
Make blood collection bottles with the level of blood required

Remove protective cap and cleanse the top of the blood collection bottle with an anti-septic
Apply for tourniquet
Palpate then remove tourniquet while you prep the skin
Clean intended area for 60 seconds with alcohol Clore hexedine gluconate
Allowed to dry completely
Anaerobic
Airless environment
Aerobic
Air

Clean the area again using an outward spiral taken care to cover the entire 2 to 2.5 inch area this time using provodine iodine.
Do not touch the area after has been cleansed
Reapply for trying to get after your assure that area has dried
Ask the patient to clinch their hand to a fist
Stretch the skin downward
Quickly insert the needle into the van at 8:15 to 30° angle with a bevel facing up
Have them unclench their fist

As each tubes removed from the needle holder, gently invert to properly mix the specimen

Remove the tourniquet

Monitor the patient’s condition

Make sure to not disrupt the needle position as tubes fell

Collect on the proper order if there are more tubes
Quickly move the needle
Apply gauze using pressure
Activate the safety device
Dispose of the needle
Make sure the van is not leaking by conducting a two point check observing the site for up to 10 seconds

Apply a bandage
Label everything
Check the patient again
Leave the room
