Routine /Capillary Flashcards
When performing bilirubin blood collection on an 8month old infant which should u gather
Alchol pad and 2mm lancet
For infants younger than
One year old, a capillary collection is the preferred method because it requires less blood
Hemocrit
Portion of blood that is expressed as a percentage
Iatrogenic anemia
Anemia caused by collecting too much blood from a patient
The first five steps for a dermal puncture
Introduce yourself
Identify the patient using at least two methods of identification
Position the patient they should be lying down or sitting place, their hand below the level of the heart
Wash hands
Don gloves
Dermal puncture procedure six through 8
Assemble the equipment, a micro collection tube
Check the warmth of the hand
Identify the site for adults and children older than one year use the middle finger or ring finger never perform a fingerstick on a finger that is cold, acyanotic, scarred, swollen, and has a rash stick on the flashy, off-center side of the finger
Dermal puncture nine through 10
If the patient fingers are cold in the blood supplies, Limited have them open and close their hand rub their hand vigorously or replace their hand below the level of the heart for 30 seconds, or have them wash their hands and warm water
Clean the site with isopropyl alcohol
Dermal puncture 11 through 13
Puncture the site, make sure the puncture is perpendicular to the finger lines
Dispose of the lancet into the biohazard sharps container
Wipe away the first drop of blood
Dermal puncture 14-15
Allow blood dripping to the collection tube cap the tube when it is filled you can provide pressure to the first joiner the finger with the press and release technique do not scoop the blood do not take longer than 2 minutes to fill each tube
After capping the tube, use a gods pad and apply pressure
Dermal 16-21
Lable every specimen before leaving the patient bedside
Thank the patient
Observer any complications collect all garbage
Remove gloves and wash hands
A heel stick is used to obtain capillary blood
From infants younger than 12 months
First-5 step to capillary collection for a baby
Assemble equipment, use sterile, lancet know deeper than 2 mm micro collection tubes
choose the right lancet. If their child’s weight is 1 kg choose a lancet that punctures the skin to a depth of 0.65mm. Never use a lancet that goes deeper than 2 mm the most common size for infants is 1 mm depth lancet.
Position the child, if possible, the child should be supine
apply to heal warmer for 35 minutes
wash your hands and Don gloves
6- 9for capillary collection in a baby
Select to cite the best sides or lateral or medial side of the heel do not use a site that was recently used
Cleanse the site
Place a lancet on the skin make the puncture use your thumb on your finger gently squeezes you do not squeeze for a long time or use excessive pressure
Wipe away the first drop of blood
10-11 capillary collection for a baby
Touch the open tip of the collection tube to the puncture site allow the blood dripping to the tube
If the blood flow stops, wipe away any surface cloth with a ghost pad, stop squeezing the heel These actions will allow the capillaries to refill.
