In Spanish you use ordinal numbers from 1 to 10. For everyday use, the cardinal numbers are used from number 11
ex. I like the first song on the record
I live on the 14th floor.
ex.
ex. Me gusta la primera cancion del disco.
Vivo en la planta catorce.
When speaking about the date, ordinal numbers are only used for the 1st day of the month
ex. today is the 1st of May
today is the second of May
ex.
Hoy es el primero de mayo.
Hoy es el dos de mayo.
Ordinal numbers, like adjectives, agree with the nouns that they describe. In singular the masculine ending is usually -o, and the feminine ending is -a
ex. I like the first song of his second record.
ex
Me gusta la primera cancion de su segundo disco.
An exception to the rule are the masculine singular forms of Primero (first) and tercero (third), which drop the -o before the noun
ex. I prefer the first to the third record
ex.
Prefiero el primer al tercer disco.
Mi primer hijo sera medico, el tercero sera catnate…My first son will be a doctor, the third will be a singer….( for this case, TERCERO doesn’t stand b/f a noun and therefore the -o isn’t omitted, unlike ex el tercer disco)
the plural ending has -os with masculine nouns and -as with feminine nouns
ex. January and February are the first months of the year
These are the second vacations that I’m spending in Sevilla
ex.
Enero y febrero son los primeros meses del ano.
Son las segundas vacaciones que paso en Sevilla.
