Spain Rivalry Flashcards
3 examples of rivalry with Spain in the New World:
1) English tried to trade goods and English cloth with Spanish colonialists but this was illegal
2) English Privateers attacked Spanish ships and stole their gold
3) Hawkins illegally took part in the slave trade selling slaves to Spanish colonies
Spanish Armada Plan
1585 - Philip II started planning to invade England with the Armada
1587 - Drake raided Cadiz and burnt 30 ships (the singeing of the King of Spain’s beard)
Plan was to pick up forces of the Duke of Parma in Calais, sail over to England then take London
Reasons for failure of the Armada (4)
1) Lord Howard sent fireships into Calais which panicked the Spanish. They set sail to the Netherlands.
2) Lord Howard attacked Spanish at the Battle of Gravelines near the Netherlands. 1000 Spanish sailors were killed.
3) Bad weather forced Spanish away from Netherlands into the North Sea. They had to sail up and around Scotland to return home. Many ships were wrecked on the coast.
4) Good leadership of the English commanders Francis Drake, Howard of Effingham and John Hawkins.
