Exploration Flashcards
3 reasons why people went exploring
Economical: To raid Spanish ships and gain access to new markets and resources
Political: To increase the power and status of Elizabeth and England
Technological: New inventions like the galleon ship made exploration possible
3 examples of famous voyages
1560s: John Hawkins sailed to Africa and then the West Indies and traded slaves illegally
1577-80: Francis Drake’s Circumnavigation of the Globe
1595: Raleigh’s went to the Americas to establish a colony but failed
3 features of Drake’s Circumnavigation
Mutinies and losses meant that he lost 4 out of the 5 ships on the journey
Named California as Nova Albion (New England) and claimed it as an English colony
Established trading posts in the East Indies
How did Raleigh prepare for the Roanoke colony? (3)
Planned and organised and financed voyages to explore and settle North Carolina
Organised many different types of craftsmen to go on the trip (brewers, stonemasons, cobblers)
Encouraged settlers to learn Algonquin (native language)
3 reasons why the Roanoke colony was a failure
The merchants did not do any physical work. They had expected to use Native Americans as labour.
The colonists left England too late to reach Virginia in time to plant crops
Many of the colonists became ill during the journey and were still unwell when they arrived
