Space Topics 1-2 Flashcards
Point of Reference
A set of axes (of any kind) that is used to describe the positions or motions of things.
Celestial Bodies
Objects in the sky, such as the sun, moon,
stars, meteors and planets.
Constellations
Groups of stars that resemble objects, animals or people in the night sky.
Asterism
Groups of stars that are recognized in popular culture but are not recognized by the International Astronomical Union.
Azimuth
The azimuth coordinate tells you which direction to face while looking at an object in the sky.
Altitude
The altitude coordinate tells you how high the object is in the sky.
Astrolabe
Any type of early scientific instrument used for reckoning time and for observational purposes.
Geocentric
The idea that the Earth is at the centre of the universe and that all other objects revolve around Earth.
Heliocentric
The idea that the sun was at the centre of the universe. The Earth, stars and other planets revolved around the sun.
Optical Telescopes
Gather and focus more light into our eyes.
Refracting Telescopes
A refracting telescope uses two convex glass
lenses to gather and focus light.
- The objective lens gathers light to create a
brighter image. - The eyepiece lens focuses the light into your eye
to create a magnified image with more detail.
Reflecting Telescopes
A reflecting telescope uses a concave mirror and a
convex lens to gather and focus light.
- The objective mirror gathers light to create a brighter
image. - The eyepiece lens focuses the light into your eye to
create a magnified image with more detail.
