Space Flashcards
What is the structure of the universe?
Vast expanse contaningGalaxies.
What are galaxies made up of
Stars, gas and dust.
What is the solar system made up of
The sun, planets, moons and other celestial bodies
What is the formula for gravitational force
Weight=Mass x gravitational field
What is weight, mass and gravitational field measured in
Weight=(N) = Neutons
Mass=(Kg)=Kilograms
Gravitational field=(Kg/N)= Kilograms divided by neutons
What are the two historical models of the universe and what were they
Heliocentric- Sun as the centre-Copernicus
Geocentric-Earth as the centre-Ptolemy
What does the Earth orbit
The Sun
How long does it take the Earth to orbit the Sun
365 1/4 days, 1 year
What causes night and day
The earth rotating on its axis
What is the order of the planets from the Sun
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What is the gravitational force
It is the force that holds all the planets in orbit around the Sun
What causes the seasons
Earth being tilted on its axis
What position is the Earth in summer
When the Earth is tilted towards the Sun. More hours of sunlight and rays shine more directly so it is warmer
What position is the Earth in winter
Its tilted away from the sun. Fewer hours of sunlight and rays spray out more so its colder
What orbits the earth
The Moon it is Earths natural satellite
What happens when the Moon is in a waxing phase
More of the Moon becomes visible
What happens to the Moon in a waning phase
Less of the Moon becomes visible
What position is the Moon when there is a new Moon
It is in between the Earth and the Sun
What position is the Moon when there is a full Moon
It is on the opposite side of the new Moon and is no longer between the Sun and Earth
What happens in a lunar eclipse
The Earth casts a shadow on the Moon
What happens in a solar eclipse
The Moon casts a shadow on Earth
