Filtration Flashcards
What is filtration
Filtration is the process that separates solid particles from a liquid
What is the name for the separation technique which uses a funnel and special paper
Filtration
What is the technical word for the substance that is caught in the filter
Residue
Which separation technique could you use to separate sand from water
Filtration
Which separation technique would you use to recover salt from sea water
Crystallisation
Which separation technique could you use to recover water from sea water
Distillation
Explain the practical for separating sand from water
Place filter paper in a funnel, Place the funnel in a flask,. Pour the water into the funnel. The sand (residue will remain in the filter paper) and the salt water solution will gather at the bottom of the flask (filtrate)
Explain how you would separate a mixture of salt, sand and water.
First step filtration above.
Then evaporation and crystallisation - see image for equipment
Set up a Bunsen Burner, tripod gauze, and heatproof mat and place an evaporating dish onto the gauze.
Half fill the evaporating dish with filtrate ( salt solution)
Heat the solution with a medium flame to evaporate the water
When a quarter of the boiling solution is left turn off the Bunsen burner and leave to cool.
Salt crystals will form in the evaporating dish.
What is a mixture
Two substances mixed together that are not chemically bonded so can be separated
What does soluble mean
A substance that will dissolve in a particular solvent
What does insoluble mean
A substance that cannot dissolve in a particular solvent
What does saturated mean
A solution into which no more solute can be dissolved
What is a mixture
Two substances mixed together that are not chemically bonded so can be separated
What is a solution
This forms when a solute dissolves in a solvent
