SP Virtualization Flashcards
What is a Network Function?
It is a function that is performed by a physical appliance like a router, switch, firewall, load balancer, IDS, WAN optimizer, etc. Most vendors have proprietary solutions in which hardware and software are tightly coupled.
What is a Virtual Network Function (VNF)?
It is the virtual version of a hardware device’s network function. Examples: vEdge Cloud, CSR1000v, ASAV
What is the ETSI NFV Architectural Framework?
European Telecommunications Standard Institute – ETSI, defined the framework that describes a standard hardware to run multivendor VNFs
Component of ETSI NFV responsible for managing one or more VNFs
Element Manager - Responsible for managing one or more VNFs, it is a VM that manages the VNFs (vCenter?)
Layer that abstracts or converts physical hardware into virtual hardware for the VNFs (VMs)
NFVI - Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure
Cisco’s hypervisor software, recommended below
NFVIS
The families using IOS-XR like A9k or CSR can use the _____________________ to allocate boards to different instances. The connections between SDRs must be external.
Secure domain router
Software Isolated Virtual Router - Software routing instances isolation Share the same physical hardware • Overlay o Guest OSes run on another OS, does not scale well as it implies resource control (Type 1 Hypervisor) • Kernel o Virtualization support in the kernel allows VMs to directly access the hardware o Introduces instability to the kernel • Application o Virtualizes individual applications (Docker) o Low overhead but complex design
Software Isolated Virtual Router
Hardware Isolated Virtual Router - Dedicated hardware, boards in the chassis, therefore more expensive Only the chassis, power, cooling are shared No virtualization of Data or control plane Higher resilience and security Better management and performance HVR is ideal for SP Secure domain Router
