What is the Ecumenical council?
Assembly of the Pope and bishops to discuss matters of the Church
What was the Second Vatican council?
Its main discussion aims were to talk about how the Catholic Church could connect with the modern world. It opened in October 1962 under Pope John XXIll and closed in December 1965 under Pope Paul VI.
What were the four main documents of the second vatican council?
- Sacrocantum concillium
- Lumen Gentium
- Dei Verbum
- Guadium et Specs
What was Sacrocantum Concillium?
•It meant that Mass could now be said in peoples local language. This meant people could understand more what
was happening in the liturgy.
•The Eucharist was also given in both forms so people could receive both the bread and the wine during Holy Communion.
What is Lumen Gentium?
•it was taught only Catholics could achieve salvation, however this was changed to say that there was a possibility that non-Catholics could aswell
•There was more responsibility for Bishops to work together to
make adaptations to the Church.
•It reminded people that they should go to Mass weekly and take part in the
sacraments often
What was Dei Verbum?
•The Word of God is not specifically the Bible it is actually Jesus and the
teachings that he gave.
•It also redocumented that the Bible should be seen as the inspired word of God and the humans who wrote it were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
What was Gaudium et Specs?
•It spoke about the fact that there should be one unified Church through discussions and modifications in science, poverty and social issues.
•It highlighted that even though advancements in technology were a
benefit, we should always remember the idea of dignity of the human person
