Limitation of a photograph
They only show one moment in time – we do not know what happened before or
after the photograph was taken.
2. They can be biased and subjective – showing us only what the photographer wants
us to see.
3. It is limited in perspective as it only shows a scene through the photographer’s eyes.
4. Photographs can be altered or doctored.
5. Photos can be staged or posed.
6. Photographs can be open to interpretation.
Value of a photograph
Reflections of attitudes, trends in filmmaking at a specific time.
2. Can show aspects of the culture-i.e. dress.
3. Good examples of propaganda, as they are often posed.
4. Can capture moments in history in vivid detail, providing a unique glimpse into a
point in time and simulating piece of historical evidence.
Limitations of cartoons
- Produced by an artist with a definite point of view, and therefore inevitably biased, being influenced by the opinions and prejudices of its creator.
- Limited scope- generally highlights one specific aspect of a period of history.
- Artist not generally concerned with providing a factual account of a historical event
or circumstance, but rather with producing a creative piece of work or expressing own opinions and emotional reactions.
Value of cartoons
Can effectively capture the spirit of a time, and the opinions and sentiments generally characterizing that time.
