Supreme court overturns Plessy v. Ferguson stating that separate schools could never be equal
1955
Rosa Parks refuses to get off bus, lead to Montgomery Boycott until 1956 when Montgomery finall desegregated buses.
1957
Jan: Foundation of Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC)
Sept: Little Rock Nine - Eisenhower sent federal troops to to escort black children to Little Rock school
1960
Feb: Woolworths lunch counter sit-in
April: Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
1961
May: Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and SNCC start Freedom summer. Result: Interstate buses were desegrated
1963
May: Birmingham protests. Result: People nationwide saw the brutality exterted on black people by Eugene “Bull” Connor
Aug: March on Washington for jobs and votes. Results: 200,000 people were in attendance
1964
Freedom summer: Mass attempt to register black people to vote
July: Civil Rights Act signed. Results: prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin. The law also provides the federal government with the powers to enforce desegregation.
1965
Feb: Malcolm X assassinated
March: Selma to Montgomery march
Aug: Voting Rights Act: Disbanded literacy tests, thus, making it easier for black people to vote.
