Sound Waves Flashcards
What is a medium?
A substance through which wave motion travels.
What is a receptor?
A sound can only be perceived by a receptor, such as the human ear or a microphone.
What is energy?
The ability to produce work. Its unit is joule, 1 J.
What is resonance?
A phenomenon where two oscillators interact with one another. In resonance, one oscillator causes another oscillator to vibrate at the same frequency.
What is loudness?
A quantity that describes how loud a sound is. Measured in decibels, 1 dB.
What is noise?
Disturbing or harmful sounds are called noise.
What is ultrasound?
A sound with a frequency over 20,000 Hz.
What is infrasound?
A sound with a frequency under 20 Hz.

what are sound waves?
Sound waves are longitudinal waves produced by vibrations. 19
what does the pitch of the sound wave depend on
The pitch of the sound wave depends on the frequency of the vibrations
20
how does sonar work
uses reflection of sound waves to estimate distances
23
Distance = speed x time = 1500 m/s x3s = 4500 m
24
why is speed of sound greater in solids than in liquids than in gases
Sound is able to move faster in liquids and solids because they are more dense. The atoms are closer together and the vibrations can move faster.
