Refraction Flashcards
What is refraction?
A change in the direction of light rays that occurs when the rays penetrate the interface between two substances.
What is total internal reflection?
A phenomenon where light refracts so greatly that it is reflected according to the laws of reflection.
What is an interface?
The boundary between two different substances, e.g. glass and water.
What is the angle of incidence?
The angle formed between the arriving light ray and the normal of the surface.
What is the angle of refraction?
The angle formed between the refracted light ray and the normal of the surface.
What is a parallel transition?
A phenomenon where light retains its direction but moves slightly sideways when refracting into a substance and back out from it.
This happens when light travels through a window glass, for example.

When the medium changes…
the speed of the wave might increase or decrease
25
When waves change medium and their speed and direction change, it is called…
refraction (refraktio, taittuminen). This happens with all waves.
29
law of refraction …
Angle of refraction is less than the angle of incidence ,if light slows down. (the second medium is more optically dense).
48
the critical angle…
When entering from a “slow medium” to a “fast medium”, there is a critical angle after which refraction doesn’t happen anymore.
In the experiment in class, this is approximately 42 degrees.
