Sound Waves Flashcards
What’s a medium
A medium is a substance or particle that carry waves.
Does sound need to be carried through a medium?
yes
What are waves
Waves are the of transfer energy without transferring mass
What is a transverse wave?
Transverse waves are waves that vibrate at a 90-degree angle.
what are longitudinal waves?
Longitudinal waves are waves that vibrate particles in the same direction of the wave.
What direction does a transverse wave vibrate?
a slanted up and down/ oscillation
What direction does a longitudinal wave vibrate?
Horizontally
Amplitude meaning?
How high the wave goes at the peak from the rest position or in other words how hard the medium is vibrated AKA loudness
What is wavelength?
The distance between a point of a wave and the same point on another wave
What’s frequency?
Number of waves in a second measured in Hertz/Hz
How does sound transfer?
Sound waves work by vibrating the medium in a room causing waves/noise
trough meaning?
The bottom peak of the wave at the rarefaction section.
compression meaning?
part of the wave where particles are close together
Formula of counting wave speed
Wave speed = Hz * Wavelength (m)
Rarefaction meaning?
The part of the wave where particles aren’t close together.
