Sound Representation Flashcards

1
Q

What is the sample rate?

A

The rate (number of times in a given time period, normally a second) that a ‘sample’ of the analogue sound wave is taken to represent the sound in digital format

Q

What is bit depth?

A

The number of bits available to represent each sample. A higher bit depth means that a greater range of sounds can be represented.

Q

How would you improve the quality of a digital sound file?

A

Increase the bit depth (allowing a greater range of sounds to be represented)
Increase the sample rate (giving a truer representation of the original sound wave)

Q

Why is analogue sound better than digital?

A

Analogue sound is represented as free flowing waves rather than being limited to the sample rate of digital, Digital sound is therefore a more limited version as the sound patterns’ frequency cannot exceed the sample rate of the speaker.
