Sound and Light Landon Hodge Flashcards
What is pitch?
It is how high or low a sound wave sounds, and it depends on frequency.
What is a sound wave?
It is a longitudinal wave that requires a medium to travel through and is caused by vibrations.
What is infrasound ?
It is a sound wave with a frequency lower than 20 Hz.
What is ultrasound?
It is a sound wave with a frequency of higher than 20 000 Hz.
What is resonance?
It is when two different objects vibrate naturally at the same frequency.
What is intensity?
It is how fast a sound wave transmits energy through a certain area of a medium. (How loud something is)
What is a decibel?
It is the unit that relative intensity is measured in.
What is fundamental frequency?
The frequency of a primary standing wave. Lowest frequency.
What are harmonics?
They are the certain number of whole-number multiples of the fundamental frequency.
What is sonar?
It is a system that sends out sound signals and receives the echo returns that come back in order to find an object’s location or to communicate.
What is the Basilar Membrane?
It is a membrane that is contained in the cochlea that is long and flexible. Parts of the Basilar Membrane vibrate at natural frequencies that are not the same.
What are photons?
They are a packet that contains energy or electrons and have no mass.
What is intensity in light?
It is how fast energy flows through a certain part of space. The quantity that measures how much light is lighting up a surface. It depends on the amount of light and power or how many photons.
What is radar?
It stands for radio detection and ranging. It is a system that bounces radio waves off of things to the speed and location of certain objects.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
It shows light at every possible frequency, wavelength, and energy.
