Matter-Landon Hodge Flashcards
Matter
Anything takes up room and has mass.
Chemistry
The scientific examination of what makes up matter and how matter changes.
Element
Something that cannot broken apart into less complex things through a chemical way.
Atom
The tiniest part of an element that keeps the same properties of the element.
Compound
Something made from the smallest parts of at least two different elements that are combined in a chemical way.
Molecule
The littlest part of a substance that maintains all of the properties of that substance.
Chemical formula
Mixture of chemical symbols and numbers to show what a substance is.
Pure substance
Matter that is either one element or one compound that cannot be separated by a physical means.
Mixture
At least two substances combined physically not chemically.
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture in which the substances are not evenly distributed.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture in which the substances are evenly distributed and the whole mixture is the same.
Miscible
Substances that can be mixed.
Immiscible
Substances that cannot be mixed.
Melting point
Point when temperature and pressure become enough to turn a solid to a liquid.
Boiling point
Point when temperature is great enough to turn liquid to gas.
Density
The ratio of how much matter is in something to how much space that something takes up.
Reactivity
If a substance is able to combine with another substance through a chemical means.
Flammability
If an object can react to oxygen or burn when put with a flame.
Physical properties
Odor, volume, color
Properties that can be observed without changing the substance.
Chemical properties
Harder to observe
Have to observe while identity of substance changes.
Physical Change
Matter changing into something else without changing its chemical properties.
Chemical Change
Matter changing into at least one complete new substance.
