Chapter 7 Solutions Flashcards
(23 cards)
Colloid
Mixture with little particles that are in between the size of particles in solutions and those in suspensions that suspend in liquids, solids, or gases.
Emulsion
Mixture between at least two immiscible substances where one liquid is mixed in the other.
Solution
Homogeneous mixture of at least two substances that are uniformly mixed.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved into the solvent.
Solvent
The substance where the solute is dissolved.
Alloy
A mixture with at least two metals.
Heterogeneous mixture
When the amount of each substance in a sample of mixture varies.
Decanting
When you pour a lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid.
Immiscible
Unable to mix.
Tyndall Effect
When particles in a colloid scatter light that passes through.
Polar Compound
Molecule in which its electrons are not distributed evenly.
Hydrogen bonding
A intermolecular attraction where hydrogen that is bonded to an electronegative piece of one molecule is pulled to two electrons of another molecule that aren’t shared.
Nonpolar compound
Compound where electrons are divided evenly among the atoms.
Solubility
The max amount of a solute that will dissolve in a solvent with given quantity, temperature, and pressure.
Concentration
How much of a substance is in a given amount of mixture, solution, or ore.
Unsaturated solution
Solution that has less than the max amount of solute.
Saturated solution
Solution that dissolved the max amount of solute in certain conditions.
Supersaturated solution
Solution with more dissolved solute than is needed to make it to equilibrium at that temperature.
Molarity
Concentration of dissolved solute in solution per liter.
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve.
Soluble
Able to dissolve easily.
Dilute
Solution that has a small amount of solute.
Suspension
Mixture where particles are either more evenly distributed or less evenly distributed through a liquid or gas.
