Sound and Heat Flashcards
How do you change the loudness or the pitch of a sound?
Loudness= increase the energy of the vibrations.
How can sound waves be compared using an oscilloscope?
You can see the wave difference visaually in sound waves
Frequency
pitch of a note
wavelength
how stretched or squished the curvy lines are.
amplitude
The amount of energy that a sound wave has.
What are soundwaves?
They are the wave that goes through an object(such as air)
How can echoes be used?
Fisherman use echoes by having the sound waves sent form the boat. If a shoal of fish are underneath the boat the echo will come back faster
speed of sound =?
air=330m/s water=1500m/s brick=4300m/s iron 5000m/s
what is the hearing range in humans?
20 Hz-20,000 Hz
What is ultrasonic?
sound waves above human hearing threshold
What can we do to prevent hearing damage?
turn down the volume, wear ear defenders when working in noisy places or with loud machinery, avoid shouting, use sound proofing
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Temperature measures heat
What is a conductor
something that heat can pass through
What is an insulator?
something that heat cannot pass through
What is convection?
When a kettle boils, the hot air rises and the cool air falls. This circulation current is called convection.
