Sound Flashcards
What is the wavelength?
The distance from identical parts of a wave.
What is crest?
The highest point of the transverse wave.
What is the rest position?
A line that is in between the crest and trough of a transverse wave.
What is amplitude?
Height of a transverse wave from the rest position. How compressed or rarefied a longitudinal wave becomes.
What are compressions?
When the waves of the longitudinal wave becomes compressed or squished together.
What are rarefactions?
How spreadout the ways of a longitudinal wave comes.
What is a trough?
The lowest point of the transverse wave.
What are the two types of waves?
Longitudinal waves and Transverse waves
What is frequency?
Number of complete waves that pass a fitted point in a given amount of time.
What is reflection?
When I wave starts the surface and bounces off of it. EX: echo
What is refraction?
The bending of waves as they enter a new medium. The bending occurs due to the change in speed of the wave
What is diffraction?
Change in behavior of the wave as it encounters new obstacles.
What is the Doppler effect?
The apparent change in frequency of a wave as the source moves in relation to the observer.
What is resonance?
When wave strikes an object the object vibrates.
What factors affect how fast sound waves move?
elasticity, density, and temperature
