Chemistry Basics Flashcards
What is mass?
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
What are physical properties?
Properties that can be observed without changing the chemical identity of the substance.
- Boiling Point
- Freezing Point
- Melting Point
- Color
- Shape
- Malleability
- Ductility
- Smell
- Density
- Size/Volume
- Solubility
- Polority
What are chemical properties?
Properties that describe the potential of a substance to undergo a change that will alter its chemical identity
- Flammability
- Combustibility
- Radioactivity
- Biological Composition
Who are the scientists that discovered the proton, neutron, and the electron?
Rutherford - Proton
Chadwick - Neutron
Thomson - Electron
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different atomic masses and different properties. Ex: C12, C14, and C13
What are ions?
Atoms that have gained or lost electrons or atoms with a charge. Ex: NaCl splits into Na+ and Cl- so Na+ and Cl- are ions.
What are valance electrons?
The outermost electron in an atom that are involved in bonding. Ex: B^-3 has 3 valance electrons.
What is Matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
