Oxidation Numbers Flashcards
What is rule 2?
The oxidation number of a monatomic ion is the charge of that ion.
What is rule 3?
The oxidation of group one metals is +1 unless elemental.
What is rule 4?
The oxidation number of group 2 metals is +2 unless elemental.
What is rule 5?
Hydrogen is +1 when bonded to a nonmetal, -1 when bonded to a metal, 0 if elemental.
What is rule 6?
Oxygen is -1 in the peroxide polyatomic ion (rare), is -2 in all other cases, 0 if elemental.
What is rule 7?
Fluorine is -1, 0 if elemental.
What is rule 8?
The sum of all oxidation numbers in a compound equals 0.
What is rule 9?
The sum of all oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion equals the charge of that polyatomic ion?
What is a peroxide?
A compound containing O2.
What is diatomic?
An element that will always have two atoms . They are Br, I, N, Cl, H, O, F or BrINClHOF.
What is monatomic?
An element consisting of one atom.
What is polyatomic?
A compound consisting of 2 or more atoms.
What is elemental?
An element that is by itself.
What is rule 1?
Uncombined elements and diatomic elements have an oxidation number of 0.
