Q

What is Alpha Decay?

A

When an atom ejects a helium nucleus (2p+ and 2n) from its own nucleus. This reduces the atomic mass by 4 and the atomic number by 2. Can be blokes by paper.

Q

What is Beta Decay?

A

Occurs when a neutron in a nucleus ruptures and releases a proton and an electron. The electron is ejected from the atom. The atomic mass stays the same and the atomic number increases by 1. Can be blocked by wood.

Q

What is Gamma Radiation?

A

High energy waves that are spontaneously given off by radioactive atoms. Most dangerous form of radiation.Because it is energy not particles it can pass through most substances but can stopped by concrete.

Q

What is radioactivity?

A

The spontaneous emission of radiation by an unstable atomic nucleus. Discovered by Henri Berquerel by placing a photographic plate on a uranium rock.
