How trick or treating arrived in America

Time mag. 11/6/17

On Hallowtide, the eve of All Saints’ Day the poor went to the homes of the wealthy and offered to pray for the recently departed in that household; it was believed that more prayers meant a soul was more likely to be saved. The rich then rewarded the poor with food and beer.

After the Protestant Reformation, the idea that souls could be saved in this way began to lose popularity in many of the new denominations. Some people kept up the tradition but its religious connection faded, even among Catholics. By the 1840’s, when a wave of Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the custom to the U.S., it was basically a secular pastime.

By 1930’s America had a new term for the old tradition: trick or treating.

HEARTS

Time mag. 11/6/17

20 Americans die every day while waiting for a heart transplant.

Because so many people have died from the opioid epidemic, there have been more potential donor organs infected with hepatitis C in recent years which get rejected. Cases of hepatitis C nearly tripled from 2010 to 2015. Experts attribute this to a rise in injection drug use. Well, these hearts are rejected as a donor heart because of the hepatitis C. But now they are transplanting these hep C hearts into patients then curing the hep C with new powerful drugs. This makes the waiting line much shorter.

[MN: Kinda ironic that drug user dies but their heart saves a life

elsewhere.]

3,991 Number of people in the U.S. currently on the waiting list for a heart transplant.

3,191 Number of heart transplants performed in the U.S. in 2016.

“The Ultimate Cruise Ship” Netflix original 2018.

Top heavy is a very dangerous concern on ships. In 1907, Italy launched its new ship the SS Principessa Jolanda into the water and it capsized and was lost.

After the Titantic, ships were required to carry more lifeboats on the main deck. In the Summer of 1915, the SS Eastland, with 2,500 passengers for a Chicago river cruise was about to sail. It rolled over and capsized. 844 people died! [MN: I think the people all rushed to one side of the ship to wave goodbye. Not mentioned in the story.]

On a modern cruise ship, each item on board is weighed and catalogged on its position on the ship. This is about 20,000 items.

A

Vibration from propellers is very important. Every part of the cruise ship must be tested with vibration sensors to assure total vibration free comfort runs throughout the entire vessel.

A cruise ship propeller is huge, 30 tons. It takes special alloys and engineering to not cause cavatation air bubbles. The bubbles bounce against the hull and make the ship vibrate severe enough to shake dinner plates off the table and the vibration makes a horrible loud noise which is uncomfortable to hear.

This 30 ton propeller takes 3 weeks to cool down from casting, then anotheer week before it can be ground smooth.

Before installation they will grind off about one ton of surface bronze to make the surface smooth and have no imperfections. This grinding by grinders takes another four weeks!
