Earth Flashcards
How high are the Himalayan Mountains?
The Himalayan Mountains have over 100 mountains taller than 23,600 feet.
Everest is the highest mountain in the Himalayas at 29,029 feet and still growing!
The Himalayas are mostly limestone. Limestone is made from compressed fossils of sea shells and creatures in the sea. So the tallest mountains in the world are made of dead sea life.
It takes tens to hundreds of millions of years for these fossils to become Limestone and it takes even longer for the fossils in the Limestone to end up at the top of the world as the Himalayan Mountains.
How did Limestone and sea fossils get to the top of the Himalaya mountains?
In an ancient sea, sea life died and settled on the ocean floor. The fossils became compressed in the sandy sea floor and and turned into limestone.
Some time later, Tectonic subduction occurred and one plate went on top of the other.
The Limestone ended up on the top plate. Later, this plate collided with another plate resulting in the limestone buckling upward into a mountain range.
The Himalayan Mountains were formed from Tectonic plates crashing into each other causing the crust of the earth to buckle upward.
This is why you can find Dinosaur era sea fossils at the top of Mount Everest.
Neanderthals
Neanderthals lived for 200,000 years. 40,000 years ago they walked among humans.
Lineage of King Henry VIII
Henry VIII and Catherine of Argon married had daughter Mary (later Queen Mary)
Henry divorces Catherine and marries Anne Boleyn
Henry and Anne Boleyn have daughter, Elizabeth.
Henry has both former wives beheaded because they did not give Henry a son to take over his throne.
How will global warming affect Greenland’s ice sheet?
REF: Nat Geo “Amazing planet” 2005.
With global warming, the Greenland ice sheet will melt from water run off. This result will raise ocean level by 20 feet! Boston, Miami and Venice will be underwater.
Why are there so many caves in the Untied States?
Ref: “Amazing Planet” Nat. Geo.
Central Untied States was once a sea.Countless sea creatures died and compacted into limestone. A trickle of water turns into underground rivers which forms caves. If the roof of the cave collapses, you have a sink hole. There are virtually thousands of undiscovered caves on Earth.
